5 out of 5 stars Simply AMAZING!   July 10, 2007
This game really has it all. Resident Evil 4 is probably one of the very few video games that lives up to the hype and is a game that is going to appeal to so many different gamers. This game has it all, from an almost first-person shooter perspective, to solving puzzles in a very Tomb Raider style, to interactive cut scenes and much much more.

This game is also very long. The work and detail that has gone into this game is immense. You'll feel like you have been on a journey yourself after you have completed the main part of the game. From the spooky village to the intense Castle missions, the variety is stunning.

No stone has been unturned in this game. Full interactivity is present. Just being able to hide in a building, move bookcases and drawers to block windows, run upstairs and jump out of the window, all whilst being pursued by crazed villagers after your blood is enough fun in itself. But these are just elements of the game. There are plenty of boss fights that prove challenging and are very varied. The locations and levels will blow you away with their detail and atmosphere which never fails to scare you. You will get to explore and be amazed by the detail of all the different locations.

Fighting enemies is drastically varied throughout the game. You'll encounter some rather nasty infected people along the way. At the beginning of the game, I thought the villagers were evil enough until you get to the castle and find Garradors! Massive warriors equipped with large claws on each hand. And the chainsaw-weilding crazed villagers are like something out of a horror film too.

I loved it when I first realised that when you find Ashley you have to protect her and she comes along with you on your journey. Being able to speak to her and tell her to hide while you fight off enemies is something else. It adds something completely unique to the game, and makes you feel like you're really on a mission. She is even playable in some parts which again is just another example of the sheer amount of gameplay and variety in RE4. Some moments in the game make you feel like you're right in the middle of a horror film and it's really exciting.

You simply have to have this game and see for yourself all the amazing creatures and scenes and locations that you're going to encounter on your mission. This game is complete value for money. I would happily have payed up to 100 for this game, but I'm a late starter and only recently bought the game for just 15. An absolute bargain. This game offers everything you are looking for and will appeal to almost anybody. Buy Resident Evil 4 now and experience it for yourself. You'll be amazed.

this game has had a lot of hype, but believe me it lives up to it, one of the best action games available on the ps2 and a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best action games on the Playstation 2   March 23, 2007

Resident Evil 4 throws away everything that was inferior about the previous Resident Evil titles and builds new, better ideas from scratch. No more pre-rendered backgrounds, no more loading times covered by opening doors, and no more unclear targeting of enemies, just when you need a clear, accurate shot.

In Resident Evil 4 you play Leon, saving "the president's daughter" Ashley from a bizarre European location that, judging by the village you start in, may as well be 17th century Spain. However, the opening village is just the beginning - you move through a castle, an island, and the disturbing research labs that are in every single Resident Evil title.

The enemies are smarter, wielding melee weapons such as pitchforks and scythes, and later on there are enemies with miniguns and dynamite as you progress through a military base. The best change for this instalment of the series though is the focus on set pieces. Early on, there is a great section where Leon is under siege in a house in the village and barricades the doors against enemies trying to get in, including one particularly disturbing one with a chainsaw. Later on the set pieces continue, with sections involving cannons, lava pits, gates and cannisters of liquid nitrogen.

The game is packed with extra features too, a "Mercenaries" mode is unlocked upon completion of the game, which sets a time limit and requires the player (as a range of characters, not just Leon any more) to kill as many enemies as possible. It's an addictive and arcade-style mode which gives a reason to keep playing after having seen the main game.

This Playstation 2 version does have slightly longer loading times than the Gamecube game but there are more extra features, such as a whole set of levels involving Ada, which explain what she was doing in the main story in between the bits we see her with Leon. For a completist, this makes the PS2 version worth playing even if they've gone through the whole of the game on the Gamecube.

I genuinely think Resident Evil 4 is the best game of its generation overall, because it had better graphics than anything before it, offered a huge amount to do without dragging the main story too much and it refined the Resident Evil gameplay into something much more playable and precise than before.

One of the classics of the PS2 generation.

5 out of 5 stars Got some time on your hands...?   February 18, 2007

OK. Lets get this out from the start. I played this game 6 times in a row and loved every second of it. There are so many bonus features to this game that it's difficult not to get hooked.
Complete it once and you access some mini-games, the Ada game adds a nice touch to the main story and the Mercenary games are brilliant (and don't be fooled into thinking you've finished everything until you've managed to get a five star ranking with each character on every game). Bonus weapons can be bought from the merchant depending on what mini-games you've successfully completed. You will also unlock different costumes for the characters; you can have Ashley wearing a suit of armor thus making her too heavy to be carried off!
This game is pretty much what you want it to be. If you want to run through doing the bare minimum you can, but what a shame that would be. Take the time to explore the areas completely and you will often come across things you won't expect.
I love the fact that a lot of the cut scenes were interactive, I often find these scenes in some games to be quite tiresome and can't wait to get them out of the way. Resident Evil 4 use these scenes to draw you further in to the gameplay.
The graphics are excellent with superb attention to even the smallest details.
This game is one of my all-time favourites and I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Zombie Type Action....   February 13, 2007

One Saturday night, a friend and I were stuck for entertainment. I remembered I'd been lent this game a few weeks previous, and had yet to give it a try. I'd played Resi 1 and 2 before (impressed more so by the first edition) but wasn't sure if I wanted to spend an evening puzzle solving inter-cut with annoyingly slow door opening sequences. However, we decided to give it a shot.
The thing that instantly drew me into the game was during the opening cut scene. Graphically impressive, we assumed we were watching a full motion video capture sequence. We then watched as we were left in the middle of the woods, and then the game went still. 'Ah, its crashed' we thought, right in the middle of the fmv scene. Then I tapped the controller and the character moved, only to realise that it was in game graphics. From this moment, my opinion of the game changed, and this was merely the beginning.
Right from the start, wielding a mere knife, this game was tense. One almost didn't want to move further through the trees and mist in fear of what was coming. It does however lead you in at a good pace, finding a gun fairly quickly makes dispatching local enemies a task but not impossible. By this time, you will have familiarised the menu system which is simple to use, and features a rather cool case in which all your items are carried. As we carried on, it became easier to use the controls during gameplay, feeling more fluid as each chapter was completed.
By this stage, we were both getting hooked on the action, as it seemed the further we went, things were getting darker and a bit weirder. Enemies were getting tougher, as was our armoury. The weapon upgrading system on this game is utter genius, being able find valuable stones, trade them for money with the merchant, who will then in turn boost various aspects of each weapon for a small price. It becomes addictive to try and get your sidearm to the best it can be which does make a vital difference in game (and some of the items available later on are stupidly fun!).
By the end of a six hour session on this game, my perceptions of resident evil had changed forever, I now have to buy a PS3 just so I can get number 5 when its out. This game had great pace, a tense atmosphere, addictive gameplay as well as being wonderful to look at throughout.

For the price you can now get this game, it is a MUST have if you have a few days to... well... kill.
