 A huge disappointment May 11, 2008
Having been a fan of the Mario games for many years I was hoping that SM Galaxy was going to resurrect what was lacking so much in SM Sunshine. Prior Mario games have always added a unique new style and provided enough substance in the amount of levels and the diverseness that they offer that the player would always work away awestruck and very satisfied.
Having now completed this game there is nothing that leaves me with that WOW factor. When I completed SM64 I looked back truly impressed by the difference provided by each of the levels including being lifted far up into the sky by the owl, the evolution of each of the different suits allowing progression through the game and the perfect music that is remembered especially in discovery of the underwater dinosaur. SM World is another game in the franchise that marked itself as a corner stone in the development of the series including the sheer hugeness of the game, discovering Yoshi for the first time and also the multiple hidden warps throughout the game.
Super Mario Galaxy is not a truly bad game and I am sure that early levels will provide satisfaction to the player, however the point I am trying to make is at no stage does anything supremely new get presented that will bring about the WOW factor. I will remain a huge fan of Nintendo but I remain disappointed in search of a game that progresses from SM World and SM64. Please Nintendo provide all of your fans what they have been seeking for so long, that is resurrection of the SM series and a reissue of faith that Nintendo truly is the greatest games development company.

Found this game very boring. Flying through a galaxy is all very nice but once the novelty runs off - you're left with a game that doesn't have an much to it.
Could only play this game for no more than 20 minutes at a time as I found it very repetitive and annoying. Its not a bad game its just no where near as great as Mario 64 or even Super Mario World on the SNES. The reason for it is the lack of secret rooms, secret levels and general level of excitement that was present in the other big titles. Come on - you were exploring a massive castle in the last outing - now your resorted to flying from one tiny planet to another doing pretty much the same thing over and over. The game completely lacks any depth and felt very structured. Where were the camera angles that were present before?
Due to the reviews I thought this game would be the next best thing since Mario 64 but it doesn't hit the mark. Apart from pointing the Wii controller to collect star bits there is absolutely no use made the Wii controls. Unless your under 14 - this game doesn't offer what you'd expect from the top Nintendo franchise.

Mario, Nintendo's iconic character and - for some arcane reason - the most popular platformer out there.
Seriously, how many rehashes of these games with this weak and silly character are they going to make? This is not innovative...
I'm sure this game (like any game with the name Mario) appeals to the Nintendo junkies out there, but people with a brain and some objectivity will gain nothing from playing this game.
Since entering the 3D era, we have seen 3 Mario games, but they are in actuality only one game published 3 times. But I guess this is what Nintendophiles want.
Hah, they tried a small change with the locales and characters in Mario Sunshine, but Nintendo players don't want anything new. They went in a frenzy. And behold, we are back in Mushroom Kingdom.
This game supposedly takes place in a giant spaceship where there are portals to different galaxies, but they all just lead into Mushroom Kingdom. The only difference in these worlds is a varying gravity. Like Mario Sunshine with its silly waterpump, Mario Galaxy revolves around this one feature. The rest is direct copy from Mario 64. Not very innovative.
One good point about this game is that at least they bothered to upgrade it to Wii graphical level. The game is pretty. But Nintendo wasn't supposed to be about graphics.
The Wii controls fit in pretty well, and the auto camera works fine most of the time.
CLOSING COMMENTS:
Super Mario Galaxy is one of the worst platformers I have ever played.
I suggest trying Spyro the Dragon for PS1 instead.

I really can't believe the hype surrounding this game. I purchased it 2 weeks ago and can honestly say that it is mediocre at best. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I read all the reviews on this site and thought that so many people could not be wrong! The gameplay is ok, the graphics are not 'next gen' and the actual game itself I found boring. I would rent this game first before purchasing it to avoid dissappointment. I'm sorry because I know this review will put a lot of people's nose out of joint but don't just believe the hype.

Admittedly the title for my review has been done thousands of times but it's the onlytitle suitable for such a great game. This game is fun, and challenging to a degree. The star's are harder to get than Mario 64 DS for example, meaning that the playability is greater. The game is incredibly enjoyable, and the minigames will have you trying to beat your score time and time again. This game is a highly recomended buy.
