1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware! This vacuum cleaner Sucks!   May 7, 2008
This model, the Dyson DC07, has a common fault and one that is not freely admitted by Dyson. After a while it starts cutting out. That is to say it runs for 3 - 5 minutes then cuts out, then you have to wait for 25 minutes to use it again - for another 3 minutes. This is because of a safety thermocouple that trips the current if the motor gets too hot.

This is actually a real problem. A quick search on the internet will reveal plenty of owners in the UK and the US who have had this annoying fault and will never buy a Dyson again. There are several causes. The hose and tubes can get blocked, the cyclone itself gets blocked and the filters can get blocked. Now all these are true. If the DC07 can't suck properly the motor will overheat. So I fully cleaned my cyclone, cleared all blockages, bought another lifetime filter(?) and cleaned the filter under the dust collector and it sucked beautifully Then it cut out again! So the problem lies elswhere.

The thing is this is a common fault. It's not just my DC07. So there's a real chance that you'll only get a couple of years good work out of it before you have to spend some real cash!

When I called Dyson the polite chap I spoke to acted surprised even though it was a common fault and suggested a replacement thermocouple. Cost of repair? 65 plus VAT. Now that really does suck. My Dyson is not old. It's been treated with great care and is as clean as a whistle. My 25 year old cylinder Hoover with bags did better than this.

Don't take my word for it - Google 'Dyson DC07 cuts out' and see for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Overpriced and unreliable   April 27, 2008
Our cleaner arrived broken and was never really trouble free - a number of faults grew developed over the years until the motor went. We replaced with another cheaper make. Don't believe all the hype, the product simply isn't good enough.

4 out of 5 stars Sucker for punishment   March 21, 2008

We have owned Dysons for 10 years. We started with the DC01 which was unreliable. Eventually the engine blew up and was replaced free of charge outside the guarantee but only because I created a big fuss over the phone. God knows why we stuck with them after that, but we did. We've had the DC07 for 5 years and it's been fine. I have only washed the filter when the thing stops sucking so it hasn't had the best treatment. It does what it says on the tin. It sucks hard and filters out the tiniest particles of dust. The only problem (if you can call it that) is that the plastic pipes are now ruined. There is a concertina type plastic pipe underneath the machine which has small rips in it, presumably caused by small but sharp objects. The other pipe is the extendable 'wand' which does the stairs. This has split badly at one end. A replacement is 20.00 which I suppose is not bad, as long as it lasts another 5 years! This is an expensive product when compared to Vax's, Electrolux etc. which are about half the price but for me it is better the devil you know so I'll probably stick with Dyson in the future. He seems like a nice bloke too!

2 out of 5 stars Over-rated. Cleans well but flawed engineering   March 6, 2008

Yes, it cleans well but ignore the hype, it's no better than many other cheaper models now available.

Good points:
* Good "suck"
* Cleans carpets and wooden floors well
* You can see when it's getting full
* No bags

Bad points:
* It's quite heavy
* It's poorly engineered, in particular, the tools are very flimsy
* The hose splits very easily and is a pig to repair
* Spare tools are quite expensive
* Fitting new drive belts is frustratingly difficult (I'm a professional engineer!)

In summary, we got terminally fed up with ours after 2 years and threw it out with the hose split for the 5th time and the drive belt gone (again) and some of the tool connections damaged beyond repair. I can't imagine being built in China will improve Dyson quality. We've since bought a Vax which is far better built and cleans just as well. Shame, we wanted to buy British but this Dyson is a great concept with British Leyland circa 1977 build quality.

4 out of 5 stars Super suction!   January 9, 2008

This is the first purchase of a dyson for me, although I have used them a few times before. The suction is excellent - I had only vacuumed a room 2 days before with an old dyson and the clear bin was practically full with the first use of the new one! Very powerful but very noisy. Not great if you live in flats and wish to vacuum daily.

Apart from noise, the only other complaint is that the machine is very 'plasticy' - it looks very cheap. However, it works very well so who cares! Annoying that it doesn't do hard floors too - risky if you wish to use it for that anyway.
