| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Atonement reunites Keira Knightley with her Pride & Prejudice director, Joe Wright, for the movie based on Ian McEwan's book of the same name. The result? Once of the most widely acclaimed pictures of 2007. Atonement tells the story of Cecilia Tallis (Knightley), and the housekeeper's son, Robbie Turner (played by the increasingly prevalent James McAvoy). Set during the heat of 1935, their coming together and the ensuing drama brings in Cecilia's thirteen-year old sister, Briony, whose actions prove to have far-reaching repercussions. With a terrific cast and superb direction from the aforementioned Wright, it's utterly understandable as to how Atonement has earned itself such praise. Diligently told, with some superb photography, Wright is blessed by terrific central performances by Knightley and McAvoy, both of whom have never been better. His trick also is to get the pacing of the film bang-on, taking his time to build up and layer events before he looks for any kind of pay off. As a result, as Atonement heads into its latter stages, it proves itself as a top quality drama, with a real emotional punch. Furthermore, it's one of the increasingly rare breed of films that sticks in your head for days after. As a result, for once, it really is worth seeing what critics the world over have been raving about: Atonement really is something very special indeed. --Jon Foster

I thought this film had been very overrated and was glad that I had waited to see it on DVD rather than paying to see it at the cinema. Definitely not one I would watch again.
absolutely perfect April 21, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
it's been a long time since i was this moved by a film, but i really cried my eyes out whilst watching this. The cast is superb, the story is brilliant yet tragic, and Keira Knightley's green dress is to die for. I'd definatly watch this again, for afterwards it made me want to hug my fiance for hours and be thankful that we had so much time together, when others aren't so lucky.
Great story - well told April 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having read the book prior to seeing the film I was absorbed by the accurate portrayal of the plot and emotions in the early stages. My wife, not having read the book, found it a bit slow going. With the evil deed established the film stuck to the plot in great sympathy to the book. The scenes of Dunkirk were dark and frightening. The musical score at this stage was truly brilliant with the orchestral background blending magically with the troops singing. This film will not raise your spirits. It is a sad yet very fufilling ending. The acting and direction is faultless. Overall this is great piece of cinema art, perhaps not to everyone's taste. It's the sort of serious work that I could watch several times over.
Could do better April 18, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wonderfully filmed, but the story moved a little too slowly for my liking. I do not think each of the characters was developed enough, and there could have been more depth into their feelings. Not as amazing as the critics raved about, but definitely one to see to make up your own mind!

There's no doubt, surely, that this was a beautifully crafted, styled and produced film with a musical score to match. All the actors played their parts very well, and generally speaking the finished product is a breath of fresh air compared to the tedium of most big-budget movies these days. A return to how they used to make them, if you like.
But I couldn't help thinking that the whole story pivots on the spontaneous actions (accusations, in fact) of a 13 year old girl. She deliberately points the finger of blame upon the wrong man - and if she had not, well, maybe this film would not have been made. And since the very title of the film is supposed to represent her efforts to atone for her sins, then it must be said that we see rather little of them, and I was only mildly moved by her confessions both as an 18 year old and as a much more elderly lady. There was something missing, I felt that the atonement lacked substance and I found myself caring little as to how she might make efforts to redeem herself because she was clearly not a character that many viewers will care for anyway. But there is a touching love story, built, it might be said, upon the foundations of lust rather than romance, and the efforts made by the director and cast to pull on our heartstrings during the lovers' separation (during WW2) were slightly at odds, I felt, with what I thought was a somewhat light and shallow relationship that had been painstakingly filmed earlier on. I haven't read the novel but I'll bet that in this crucial area it is a lot more convincing. The books always beat the films!
