Amazon.co.uk Review George Clooney already has one acting Oscar to his name, and it's unsurprising that immediately after the release of Michael Clayton, there were many arguing he was deserving of a second. For without a doubt, as impressive as the film is, it's very much Clooney who powers this one forward. Written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who previously adapted the Bourne movies for the big screen, Clooney takes the title role as a lawyer who goes in to do the jobs that, bluntly, nobody else wants to know about. And before long, Clooney discovers a cover-up that proves to be a mighty challenge to uncover, and one the inevitably conflicts him as a result. Aided by a superb supporting cast that includes the likes of Sydney Pollack, Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton at its best is a tense and effective thriller, written and directed steadfastly well by Gilroy. It's not without a few problems, most notably a comparably weak conclusion and one or two underdeveloped characters. But it's still a worthwhile film, and very much worth seeking out to simply enjoy a terrific performance from a Hollywood leading man who absolutely refuses to shy away from edgier roles. Long may he continue to do so. --Jon Foster

Slow May 10, 2008 A corporate thriller that takes George Clooney's 'fixer' or slightly dubious lawyer to be exact, on a crisis of conscience, as he struggles with his personal life and less than glamorous job, cleaning up rich peoples indiscretions.
This is a slick thriller, in the same vain as Michael Mann's Insider, dealing with big business and corruption, but it's slow paced, with little action what so ever.
This really is a character piece and the performances are excellent from Clooney (disillusioned lawyer), Wilkinson (mentally unbalanced lawyer) and Tilda Swinton (cold business women).
If you can handle a movie that is all talk and no action and one that causes you think from time to time this is a stylish, thoughtful, if slightly dull thriller.
Stylish but insubstantial May 8, 2008 "Michael Clayton" is a moderately entertaining thriller about a New York legal "fixer" who gets embroiled in what turns out to be a sordid case involving a large multinational whose agricultural products are suspected of causing disease and death. A crazed lawyer defending the organisation uncovers incriminating evidence against them and Michael Clayton gets called in to assist after this lawyer has a psychotic episode. The film is slow moving, cluttered with underdeveloped characters and is frequently somewhat dull. The ending of the film is revealed at the start and this takes away any suspense that gets built up as the film heads towards its rather lame conclusion. George Clooney puts in a good performance as Michael Clayton but the film overall is fairly forgettable.
A film that stays with you long after the credits have rolled May 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved this movie.
George Clooney is a fine actor. He really makes you see his character in full technicolour. The direction is tight and well measured. And Tilda Swinton? Sends shivvers down your spine.
Very thoughtful, very well written exploration of an issue that is much more real than we imagine: the lengths big corporations will go to protect their profitability.
In a world of increasingly violent action films, this is a thriller that seduces with its sheer cleverness. Vastly under-rated when it was released, despite ample praise from the critics, a truly worthwhile film.

Quite good film but slow to get going, two out of three of us watching film fell asleep.
Not worth watching May 3, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
George steals the show. The plot? and editing leave a lot to be desired. For an "intelligent thriller" it is pretty dumb with no thrills.
