A return to form May 9, 2008 I thought seasons 7-10 of Stargate SG1 were a bit of a disappointment, quite frankly. But this film was actually very good. Lots of team interaction and humour, plenty of action, and it tied up all those flying loose ends. No O'Neill, but for once he wasn't missed. I am so looking foward to Continuum now!
Thank God for small mercies May 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although a series 11 would have been preferable thank God they had the good fortune to be able to finance a full length movie. I know another is planned but I'd be happy with this. It does an excellent job of winding up SG1 with an opportunity for the team to do everything on a grand scale. It's only a shame that it doesn't happen more often. Farscape lead the way and I'm pleased to report that SG1 has done an equally good job. Maybe you have to have Ben Browder and Claudia Black in the cast? I know Stargate: Continuum is due soonish but as a stand-alone episode expanded to movie length it continues what has finished. But I'm not complaining as the Ori have been sorted!
Thank goodness for that May 1, 2008 Good grief, after the great disappointment of the last episode i felt as if the last ten years was a waste of viewing. This film has certainly filled the gap and given some closure to the series in the usual lighthearted manner. Stargate has always been top notch entertainment without having to resort to the dysfunctional family relationships and dark despairing heroes that have become the norm in a lot of modern series. Roll on Continuum and hopefully many more. Would be nice to see General Hammond show his face now and again.
What the Heck Are You Complaining About? April 29, 2008 Having watched "The Ark of Truth" and read many of the other reviews here on Amazon, I can't help but wonder what the people who didn't like it were expecting? A cameo appearance by Elvis Presley? The secret of transmuting Lead into Gold?
Some people have complained that it wasn't truly a Film, but merely two Sg-1 episodes that were shown back to back. But even though these two episodes could just as easily replaced two of the `filler' episodes in series ten, they were still two of the best episodes ever made.
We might quibble about being charged an extra ten or fifteen pounds to see the end of the Ori story line, but I can't see how this could ever be a basis for disliking the film itself. And whilst at least one person has complained that you need to have watched most of SG-1 to really know what's happening, How could anyone `skip to the end' like this and not feel as if they didn't know what the heck was going on.
Whether it's actually the last two episodes of SG-1 or not, this film was made for the hardcore fans who were deeply engrossed in the story, not the uninterested people who just happened to flick past it one night on the `Sci-Fi' channel.
At this point in a review of course, I would normally go into explicit detail about the ethical issues that SG-1 deal with, the incredible writing, the wonderful acting and the spectacular (but never gratuitous) special effects. But as far as this film is concerned, I honestly don't feel that there is any need.
If you loved the depth and soul of Stargate SG1, were moved by intelligent and emotional storylines and watched it for something other than `The cool explosions and the bright pretty colours.' If you understand what I mean when I use words like Replicators and Asgard, Ancients and Ori, Doci, Priors, Jaffa and Shol'va. If you honestly understood SG-1 and felt gutted when the tenth series simply tailed off at the end, then I can almost guarantee that you will love this film.
The Simple Truth of the Sad Story Arc April 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My anticipation of this SG-1 outing was completely off the scale, especially after such a stellar final two seasons on television that really broke the mold of the series, experimenting with the familiar formula to really involving and unexpected effect. But to my real disappointment I found `The Ark of Truth' to be a distinctly average vehicle for these well-loved characters, one with an undeniably pedestrian script and lackluster central story. I am a huge fan of ueber bad guys the Ori and yes, there's advancement, if not complete conclusion to that storyline, which is very appealing, but there's very little in terms of either plot development or character evolvement that we haven't already seen many times before in the previous two seasons. It's an adventure, sure, but somehow all the moves feel too familiar and the results too predictable to be enjoyed as they should be, especially considering how much effort has gone into many aspects of this movie.
`The Arc of Truth', whilst it begins in great style with a truly breath-taking cinematic spectacle and has moments throughout when the budget has clearly been used to its full potential with picturesque vistas, well-layered special-effects, superb sets & wardrobe, the cast seemed to me to be largely unimpressed by a derivative script that demands very little emotion of their performances. This movie has the feeling of random and unrelated story elements (i.e. replicator attack, IOA deception etc.) thrown into a melting pot in order to disguise the fact that the main ingredient has quite perplexingly been misplaced. I wanted to be engrossed by this movie, I waited patiently, I paid really close attention, but it just never happened. Thankfully this isn't the end and here's praying that the second SG-1 movie `Continuum', which explores time travel offers viewers something to really sink their collective nashers into...
