Welcome Back Robin! May 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a folk fan for over 40 years, I have beeen dismayed by how many classic folk albums have never been made available after their original (limited) release. Once in a while one is allowed to escape from the vaults and when that happens it can, as in the case of this album, be pure joy and excitement.
Robin Dransfield was a formidable talent in the 1960's and 1970's both as a solo singer and also as half of one of the best ever folk duos (Robin & Barry Dransfield), and the Band (Dransfield). His solo album "Tidewave" is brilliant and is included in it's entirity here along with a bonus which almost makes the waiting (over 30 years!) worthwhile. This CD includes never before released live tracks recorded at the Medway Centre in Kent.
These tracks on this CD may be old but they are fresh as daisies and would stand shoulder to shoulder the the best of today's folk material. Between them they highlight Robin Dransfield's ability to move through different musical styles e.g. from traditional (Cutty Wren) to Music Hall (When It's Night Time in Italy, It's Wednesday Over Here). The beautiful "Fair Maids of February" alone makes the cost of this CD worthwhile.
I hope this album leads to more classic folk albums being released (on CD) and also the return of Robin (with or without Barry) to live performance. We've missed you Barry - Welcome Back!
