Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Leona Louise Lewis is something of an anomaly. Not only is she pretty and endowed with a wonderfully elastic (four-octave) vocal range--she's also a committed vegetarian and one of the few X Factor/TV talent show winners not to immediately try to capitalise on her success with an album of weak covers. Instead, her mentor Simon Cowell (and team) have coaxed Lewis into the studio with some of America's biggest talents--Dallas Austin, Jam & Lewis--and come up with an album of weak originals. You couldn't exactly call "Spirit" a bad album. It carries memorable melodies, some classic song-writing and, of course, Lewis' seriously potent voice (she's been compared to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey already). But what the album lacks is personality. Songs like "Bleeding Love" (produced by Ryan Tedder and Jesse McCartney) are technically flawless, but you're left thinking `is this all the sass and sparkle a bonafide Hackney gal can muster?' "The Best You Never Had", the Ne-Yo produced "I'm You" and many other songs here follow this play-it-safe formula, while the album's ballads--"Footprints in the Sand", for example--are so bland even Whitney and Mariah would wince. Still, there's no doubt Lewis is a real talent. Perhaps if she ditches the overpaid `superstar' producers next time and makes the album she wants to make, we might finally hear some of her real `spirit'. --Danny McKenna

5 out of 5 stars THE NEXT MARIAH- AMAZING!!!   May 12, 2008
wow.
Bleeding Love = Well, you know its amazing!
Whatever it takes= Its inspiring. Its a turnaround after hearing bleeding love.
Homeless= Christina Aguilera ballad coming thru! Sounds like "Hurt"!
Better in Time= plinky plonky! Cant believe it didnt get to number 1 in britain!! We have no taste!
Yesterday= Sounds like Mariah Carey's new song "Bye Bye". Beautiful ballad. GREAT high note!!
Take a bow= INSTANT.CLASSIC. Should be released soon!! REALLY CLASSIC POP!
I Will Be= Hint of rock in this song. Originally by avril lavigne!
Angel= A LOT of peoples fave song. Its nice. thats all.
Here I Am= A copy of mariah Careys "Hero" except its not half as effective and isnt as strong.
I'm you= I didnt understand it at first, but it is a good song!
The Best you never had=Again, a lot of people like this one! Its sweet but it doesnt suit leona. More suited for... natasha bedingfield maybe??
Footprints= Beautiful. Absolutely. totally. Lovely :)
A moment like this= A lot of people may find this annoying after hearing it so much back in 2006, but when you hear it again, it'll give you the chills. amazing voice on this girl!
Overall, a brilliant album!!
Better than whitney, but not up to mariah's standard yet, but in leona's own words "It'll all get better in time!"

1 out of 5 stars So Dull   April 28, 2008
I don't have a problem with Leona's voice. It is plesant enough however I can not help but feel she is a diluted Mariah Carey. She seems to have very little personality and this comes through in her dull interpretations. She sure can sing but without much conviction.

2 out of 5 stars good voice.   April 26, 2008

So tell me, am i the only person right now who was not blown away by this debut cd, Bleedin' Love, aside the rest of the cd is same old, same old. I was really looking forward to recieving this cd, and really let down when it arrived. Don't get me wrong Leona has a fantastically good voice, but i got very bored of this cd after around track 4. I have tried several times to listen to it, and just find it hard too. If you want a true star who can hold a ballad check out Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston etc - i really cant see Leona Lewis surviving the test of time, or maybe i am wrong but after voting for her every week on X Factor, i felt a bit cheated!!

5 out of 5 stars Not An Artist to Be Overlooked - A True Diva In The Making.   April 20, 2008

This album is brilliant every song is memorable, never ever get tiered of listening to the lead off single 'Bleeding love', it's an extremely emotional song with equally excellent lyrics, other songs i liked were 'Whatever it takes', excellent mid-tempo gospel inspired song with a super catchy hook, and a really good vibe and lyrics, 'Homeless' is also a really good catchy ballad, vocalically it's absolutely superb, same can be said for the moving 'The first time ever i saw your face' also vocally superb and timeless, very very memorable indeed, best version I've heard of it she really made it her own, 'Footprints in the sand' this song contributed to the charity single for sport relief it's also a really good ballad, again like most of the songs on here very memorable hook, 'Here i am' the Walter Afanasieff track, it starts on the same piano note as Mariah's 'Whenever you call' from 'Butterfly'. I love all the works of Walter Afanasieff, a truly great musician and producer i can't credit him enough, he's doing very similar things with Leona that he did with Mariah a good few years back, anyway 'Here i am' is excellent ballad and gives people like me a break from generic R&B. Finally i also found 'Better in time' a stand out track, really nice vibe to it and slightly more upbeat from the other stuff on here, the remaining tracks on the album that i haven't mentioned are defiantly worth a listen, all the songs on here are great. Some tracks have the feel of early Mariah ballads while others are totally up to date modern R&B numbers, i hope that Leona can deliver this standard or better on the crucial 2nd release, i am very exited to see where she will go next. Not an artist to be overlooked at all, an addictive CD worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product   April 20, 2008

When someone like Clive Davis (Former Head of Columbia, Arista, RCA etc.) sinks $10m dollars into a project you can bet your life that it will have mass appeal and hit all the right commercial buttons. When you have Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Cowell on board you have a strong media triumvirate.

They have handled this project amazingly well making sure that it wasn't exposed to any parochial UK-based programming but publicising on the right US TV Channels and appropriate magazines (i.e. Harper's).

The content of the CD you ask? Well great for people who think diet cola is a drink and that chicken preceded by the word Kentucky is actually food. It's as frothy, inoffensive and insubstantial as a latte from one of those dreary high street coffee shops. Basically this is McMusic.

Looks like the three old men are going to get a great return on the investment in their product.
