Jack Johnson's 5th studio album has been highly anticipated, not only because it's been a while since his last recording (In Between Dreams), but also because it's his first 'electric' (as in guitar) album. But despite being co-produced by JP Plunier--the man that produces Ben Harper and the mastermind behind Brushfire Fairytales--specifically to shake things up, Sleep Through the Static isn't that much of a departure after all. The mix of mellow sing-a-longs and slacker ballads are very much in line with earlier work, even if they do feel a little more mature and come with piano flourishes by new band member Zach Gill. The new maturity is evident not only in Johnson's lyrics, which deal with everything from his new life as a father to the Iraq war, but also from the song arrangements, which foreswear the bigger hooks of previous albums for a more even flow. If that sounds like the album fails to push the envelope musically, it should. The songs here are consistently good, but they're not groundbreaking. It might feel to some like an opportunity missed; but on the other hand Sleep Through The Static is full of what Johnson does best: easy-going campfire songs infused with that eternal stoner-slacker spirit. --Paul Sullivan

I loved this album because it looks just like little Karl Pilkington's orange shaped bonce!
easy listening it definately is....if thats what your after April 2, 2008
Until purchasing this CD, I'd never actually heard of Jack Johnson if I'm honest.....
If you like abit of easy listening, something to relax to on the way home from work or something to drink a glass of wine to on a night in, this could well be for you. I would say Jack fits some where in the middle of Jamie Cullum and Simon & Garfunkel. To pigeon hole it, I would say its quite jazz like, but it definately has a pop and reggae flavour.
Being a new JJ fan, I cant compare to his older stuff, but as a new fan I can say his style is kind of familiar, but new at the same time. The lyrics could be mulled over at length or glossed over as you desire - in true easy listening fashion, the style doesnt force anything down your throat.
Like many albums, I think this one is probably a grower, so I would say give it a few good plays before deciding for yourself.
Slowly grows on u March 26, 2008
To begin with, I was a little disappointed - like people out there - about this one. The dynamic was missing from the previous records. -> But
I didn't expect it to grow on me, but it has - more than enough. At first I only liked All at Once, If I had Eyes, Go on & Losing Keys, that was it.
But eventually I began to notice tracks such as Sleep Through The Static & Hope. That means I listen to about half the album - better than good.
Hopefully some more tracks will grow on me. Jack provides more music, thats only good. As always.

The answer is a lot!
I loved the earlier stuff, Brushfire fairytales is one of my favourite albums of all time, but this is bland, passionless filler. I would use 'mulch' as an appropriate word to describe it, like standing on something unpleasant, it doesn't make you really angry but it is deeply irritating. I have always loved his laid back vibe, but this is so laid back it's comatose!
PPPLLLLEEEEAAASSSSSEEEE don't buy it! Buy Brushfore Farytales, or better still the Moldy Peaches album because it's really good :)
Consistently Brilliant March 8, 2008
The thing I like about Jack Johnson is he consistently knocks out great track after great track. After five albums his style has wavered little - easily proven by making a playlist of all five albums and sticking it on random.
The lyrics on this album are beautiful. You can't help but be absorbed in his words - these words never clouded by a big band- but accompanied by a simple guitar melody. The lyrics on the very short track Angel are so beautiful - no need to make the song longer - he said wanted to say - concisely and poetically - brilliant.
Many artists change their style over time - and succeed. But why change when your formula is so good.
Nice one Jack - keep them coming.
