1 out of 5 stars Woeful   May 9, 2008

This album is just really, really bad. I can't believe these riffs are coming out of the same person who wrote 'Satch Boogie', 'The Extremist' or 'The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing'.

Just come up with a generic riff yourself and listen to that on repeat instead.

I was a bit apprehensive about buying this album as it seemed to be getting mixed reviews and at first listen I wasn't blown away, but I think that is the problem. The reviewers have obviously not given the album a chance if they do they will be rewarded. This album is a grower.

Joe is probably suffering from having such a long career and so many albums. He is a guitarist so there is only so many things he can do as far as changing his sound.

I honestly don't feel there is a weak track on here and to be honest I think his playing on musterion and overdriver is his best in a long time.

If you are new to Joe you should probably check out Surfing With the Alien and The Extremist first as in my opinion they are his finest work but at the same time I think this album stands up well beside those two classics.

Joe is now in his 50's (although he looks 10 years younger) so you have to reward him for trying to be original and still push his playing. Most other artists at that age are happy to churn out duff albums when most of their creative edge has long gone.

I have no reservations in recommending this album.

5 out of 5 stars Rock solid!   May 6, 2008
Wonderful! Satriani is a very unusual musician in that he seems to be getting better for every album. Creative instrumental music without getting in to the jazz-morass. Great melodies, creative solos. Not a lot of experimental noise (like a notable friend of his) that makes it a pain to listen to the whole album. The only track I don't rate five stars on this album is Andalucia, and it is not all that bad.

4 out of 5 stars Satch is back!   May 3, 2008

It's impossible not to like this guy. I've played this man's music to people who would never think of listening to him, or more commonly have never heard of him before, and the reaction has always been.....this is really cool. And once again thats what he's done, created an album that is just cool. Who else could get away with such a wierd (but cool) album name? After absolutely loving Super Colossal, I was curious to see where his musical directoin would take him. And whilst writing an album that is quintessentially Joe Satriani, it still is something fresh, new and exciing to listen to. The great thing again with this album is that all the songs stand out on teir own, and it isn't certain tracks that hold it up, though I must say that out of them all it is "I just wanna Rock" that is going to stand out live.
Overall a great album!!

2 out of 5 stars Not very impressed   April 27, 2008

Apart from the first and last track this cd isn't that great to be honest. The lead work sounds really uninspired at times and Joe seems to be just wandering around the pentatonic scale. The best solo is in the first track which is never really matched again apart from some nice acoustic at the beginning of the last track. The second track,Overdriver starts out great and then it's back to a weak riff/melody that doesn't hold the listeners attention. Finally i don't think the production is as good as on some other recent efforts. The drums, instead of sounding airy and open, sound dull and compressed.
