1 out of 5 stars Shamefully Poor   May 16, 2008
What a disappointment to listen to this! Madonna is a fabulous artist but alliances with the likes of Timbaland simply destroy this, its more of a Timbaland album than Madonna. I hope future albums are only the work of Madonna and her producers and avoid clinging to who-ever may be the "in" act.

Let Madonna be Madonna... and let Timbaland be Timbaland, lets keep it seperate..ok?

Avoid this CD (unless you like r&b and Timbaland), or return to previous albums,.. the Confessions Tour is outstanding, featuring both CD and DVD of the concert, pure entertainment.

I'm only giving this one star for 'Miles Away' - the only vaguely original song on this album and because you can't give no stars. I loved 'Confessions...' and was really looking forward to this release and bought it before I'd even heard the new single. I listened to it not quite believing this was a Madonna album as it seems to have very little of her input and just sounds like so much of the rubbish by people half (or more!) her age. It's the aural equivalent of 'dad dancing' - someone desperately trying to hang on to their youth who is quickly proving to be past it, frankly. The writing seems particularly weak aswell - she uses her favourite rhyme 'waiting' and 'hesitating' at least twice here. (Listen to her other albums and see how many times she uses that one. See, it is used a lot, isn't it?!) I hope she releases at least one more fantastic album, at which point she ought to retire. Sad and embarrassing. :-(

1 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY APPALING!   May 15, 2008

I have attempted to like this album. I have listened to it countless times. But it has to be the worst cd i have ever bought. I am an obsessive madonna fan, and have even managed to find small pleasures in her poorest album 'I'm Breathless.' I have loved Madonna since about the age of 13 and even been at the front row of her Confessions Tour, but this album is DIRE!!

Not one track stands as even being good. At best 4 minutes is average. Whilst Candy Store is throughly disgusting, to quote, 'I've got turkish delight baby and so much more... sticky and sweet,' enough of the inneundo Madonna, we've heard it all before with erotica, and quite frankly I am almost vomitting at the connotations of these lyrics...

'Give it to me,' sounds like a mid 1980s gay porn soundtrack, whilst hearing Justin Timberlake squeak,' hey Madonna I'm taking you to the club,' at the beginning of Dance Tonight, makes me cringe with shame. This album is nonsense, absolute rubbish.

The one song which had the promise to be somehting special is ruined with the desperate plea of menopausal woman screeching; 'See my booty get down', NO MADONNA I'D RATHER NOT!

I wasn't sure how to rate this album. I didn't know whether to rate it according to other Madonna albums or to rate it against other music out there generally.

There is always that problem with Madonna that if she does a brilliant album (Ray of Light, Confessions...) there is much hype for the following release. "Music" in my opinion was an ok album but was a disapointment to "Ray of Light" and this album "Hard Candy" has failed to be a substantial follow-up to "Confessions".

What we need Madonna is something of good quality with feeling. There hasn't been a decent ballad release for nearly 10 years now, where have they gone?! "Substitute for love","Power of Goodbye" ring any bells? If there needs a change in direction it needs to be now to proove what Madonna really can do.

Anyway back to "Hard Candy". The opener quite frankly is very poor, the beats are not memorable and the "Sticky and Sweet" thing almost being wispered? umm NO!

The one of few decent tracks on the album is the current single, this is then followed by "Give it to Me", this is a quite good track, but does have the mid 90's feel to it with beats but this is quite catchy, but could have done with something better after the second chorus than a rapper just saying "to the left, to the right". Not much imagination there! On from there "Heartbeat" is again quite a good track and hasn't been ruined by over production or introduction of another poor performance by a rapper.

"Miles Away" is probably my favourite track on the album, and this is the nearest to a ballad, maybe the writing isn't the best, but vocally it is one of the best with madonna singing in quite a varied pitch at times. "She's not me" is a good track but it is rather stretched out, you could shave at least a minute of this track and at points I wondered if it was ever going to end. "Incredible" is just awlful, it starts off quite good but then I shuddered and winced when it turned into basic 90's wrap, with rappers going "oooh" all through it, plain tragic!

Most of the other tracks following are OK, nothing spectacular, nothing really bad, the album finishes with "Voices" which is one of the better tracks, at least it has some feeling. Maybe this track should have started the album. As mentioned before, we have all seen the cover for the cd and is probably nearing Hard Core than Hard Candy. It really isn't necessary, Madonna can look sexy in many other ways than wearing that.

Basically this album almost works if it didn't have the many rappers uttering odd words on most of the tracks. Justin's imput is the best though, I cannot fault the appearances he makes.

Come on Madonna this hope reaching 50 will bring the best in you, I will be waiting and I am already looking forward to your next album.

Way to go girl! An amazing album from an amazing artist. The hits are aplenty. Standout tracks are Give it to Me, Miles Away, She's Not Me, The Beat Goes on.
