They've found the holy grail! May 12, 2008 I can't believe its finally here, this has to be the most exciting release this year and should gain as much if not more respect as Smile did.
This is a true classic, and is indeed the holy grail of all beach boys albums.
Astonishing..... May 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
.....that someone rated this ONE out of five! Obviously knows nothing about music. Probably listens to James Blunt and David Gray. That must be why they are disappointed by this album, because the were hoping it would be more of the same. Ignore any review which doesn't give this 5/5. I managed to download it 18 months ago (naughty I know, but I'm not paying 100-200 for it)! I must admit I am a sucker for any lost gem of an album, especially when facial hair features prominently. I was sceptical when I played the first track, River Song. Within 10 seconds I knew I had found one of my favourite albums ever. The production value on that track alone is amazing. It all comes together (beach boy harmonies, gospel backing singers) into a beautiful whole. Perfect to listen to in the car on a summers day, cruising down the freeway (or stuck on the M25). The fantastic thing about this album is that half the songs are almost 2 songs in one. They start with a world weary Dennis singing about lost love and memories, before breaking into a string and horn laden funk. It is amazing. I tell you, there are not many white rock acts (least of all Beach Boys) who could get as funky as this. The arrangements are out of this world. Any album that can be so beautiful, tender (and drunk sounding) one minute, and so soulful and funky the next has to be worth a listen at least. The second disk of this new release comprises of unreleased tracks which supposedly were to make up the mythical Bamboo album. I also have a bootleg copy of most of these tracks, although I'm looking forward to hearing the cleaned up versions. Dennis apparantly preferred Bamboo, but I think POB is better, having listened to both. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE buy this album if you have never heard it, it will make you happy in times of sadness, and will make you teary when you should be happy! It really is a beatiful piece of work and I cannot speak highly enough about it. As you can tell (and no I don't work for Dennis Wilson's estate)!
Rubbish April 13, 2008 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
This album is crap. Even the Beach Boys at their very worst never recorded anything as bad as this. Do not, repeat, do not believe the hype. It's tuneless mgadon music. Dennis wrote some superb songs on Beach Boys albums but this is utter, utter, utter crap. It's one of the worst records ever released by a high profile artist. People who are praising it are playing on the fact that most of you haven't heard it. They're taking the piss out of you by claiming it's some sort of genius work. It's rubbish. I would have given it no stars but amazon only allows a lowest score of one star.
Mojo Confirmation of June release March 29, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
A Legacy Edition will be released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of this wonderful albums original release including bonus tracks plus a second disc consisting of the second album Bambu which like his brother Brian's Smile was shelved. One of the most anticipated re-releases of recent times, this is the version you will need. Absolutely essential.
JUST UNTIL MAY 13 2008 March 11, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
At last - a seminal, semi-mythical album [due to the difficulty of getting a copy on cd] finally available as gatefold blue vinyl 2-LP and CD via US Sundazed and Caribou/Epic/Legacy on May 13. The 2-lp [not sure about cd] includes 12 unissued bonus cuts from the sessions.
