5 out of 5 stars Rock on!   May 12, 2008
It's good to hear new material from Def Leppard and they certainly do not disappoint. It's somewhat heavier than either X or Euphoria with only one ballad, but that's certainly no bad thing. My favourite track on the album is "Tomorrow".

2 out of 5 stars Best album since Hysteria...of course it is, everything since Hysteria has been total muck!   May 11, 2008

I totally agree that this is Leppards best since Hysteria, it is, but when you consider the fact that eveything since Hysteria has been total crap its hardly suprising.

Im a big Leppard fan and have seen them live a number of times, but when it comes to Leppard the live performances is the only reason to still be a fan. They are amazing live, mind blowing atmosphere and Joes voice is always electric but these last few albums including 'X' and 'Yeah' are just embarressing, I want to like them but cant. I met Joe Elliot in the HMV store where I used to work, he just came in one day and my mate got the 'X' album autographed. All I could think was 'How could a legend like Joe Elliot want to admit and actually sign his name to something that bad?' Its pathetic I know but I just couldnt help thinking like that.

Despite this album been terrible, I have tickets to see them with Whitesnake and I know it will be an incredible night. They never let me down live, shame I cant say the same about their studio work.

Lets Get Rocked!

5 out of 5 stars A real return to form!   May 9, 2008

Although I have liked the previous few albums from Def Leppard, this one is a real triumph. Has some classic sounding Def Leppard tracks on it, with excellent guitar parts, classic Def Leppard harmonies and silly lyrics! Go on by it. . . .you definatly will not regret it!

3 out of 5 stars This is no classic, but a solid effort   May 8, 2008
I have to say that I partially agree with Simon Long on this. I stress only partially though!

When I first listened to the album I was very underwhelmed, especially considering all the positive reviews that I had read. The album doesn't compare to Hysteria or Pyromania in anyway, but I think this is where the problem comes in. I can't imagine that any Def Leppard album can ever live up to those masterpieces. I mean does anyone think that this is really going to happen?

However I have stuck with "Songs from the Sparkle Lounge" and I must say that it has grown on me more and more with repeated listens. I have resigned myself to the fact that Leppard are not going to reach the dizzying heights of their Hysteria days and am enjoying the album for what it is. Good fun, easy listening, rock 'n' roll! I think it is miles better than "X" and although very different I would say from my point of view it is their best since "Slang". If you didn't like Slang, that may not be a good thing though :-)

Anyway I think you should give this album a go, you may just like it, but don't be expecting Hysteria or Pyromania.

2 out of 5 stars Am I missing something?   May 8, 2008

Every review I have read of this album, from the ones on here to the one in Classic Rock magazine, is touting this album as a return to form for Leppard, and the best album since "Hysteria". Given this, I decided to give it a go, but I'm afraid I seem to be listening to a different album to everyone else...

In the mid-90's, Leppard, having parted company with producer Mutt Lange, recorded "Slang", which was a conscious effort *not* to sound like "Hysteria". It wasn't particularly well-received, so on every successive album ("Euphoria", "X" and now "Songs...") Leppard seem to have tried to go back to the sound of "Hysteria". The trouble is that they are doing so without the benefit of Mutt - and he was the person who was most responsible for it. "Euphoria" wasn't a bad attempt at remaking "Hysteria", but "Songs..." is just like "X" - a rather bland and uninspired collection of instantly-forgettable songs, with distinctly average arrangements and production. Joe Elliot's voice is showing his age - his range is noticeably constrained compared to the albums in the 80's, and the trademark harmonies from the rest of the band seem to have largely vanished. The production on "Hysteria" was interesting - every song had numerous layers. "Songs..." is all straight-ahead rock songs - no light and shade, no interesting production, basically nothing to sustain the listener's interest. The hooks that the stand-out tracks on "Hysteria" had are also notable by their absence on here - after three listens through the entire album, I literally cannot remember a single tune on it. And the lyrics, never a Leppard strong point, have got even worse, with gems like "you can't sing, can't dance, can't fit in your pants - you're a bad actress".

Everyone who is touting this as a return to form - go and listen to "Hysteria" again, and then put this album on and compare them. There is *no* comparison - much as it pains me to say it, this is the sound of Def Leppard in serious decline. Far from being a return to form, I'd say that this is possibly Leppard's worst ever album - "Euphoria" was better, and even "X" had songs that were somewhat memorable, but this is just dull.
