Can you see beyond the casting differences? October 3, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a true Waltons fan I thought it my duty to purchase this DVD and so I recently did. One cannot help but make comparisons between the 'original' cast and the 'actual' cast in the series. Apart from the children and grandma Walton all characters are different and because the series' characters have had so much stronger presence the 'original' cast does not stand much of a chance of winning anyone over. The Baldwin sisters in this film look much more like sisters but one gets the feeling that they are less endearing. Olivia in this film seems almost like a 'psycho', I am sorry if this seems harsh but at one stage John-boy appears almost frightened of her as she seems to be losing it. I wonder how she got through the original casting or perhaps the series' character in the script changed somewhat. Michael Learned is the true heart of the series so Patricia Neal probably never stood a chance.
In summary, the film re-affirms the characters in the series and the series itself and I would suggest any hardy Waltons fan to watch it but don't spend more than 3 on the DVD as it is probably not worth it. You will want to watch it once but not again.
Here is my theory, watch out for mother Walton - she is really someone who absconded from a psychiatric ward and assumed another identity as a housewife and mother; luckily, before series one started, they found her out and returned her safely. Father Walton, Grandpa and all the rest of the townsfolk were all in with the cover up plot so they all got done for and were not accepted on to the TV series.
