4 out of 5 stars IT'S THE VACUUM THAT MADE ME CHOOSE IT   May 8, 2008
THERE'S A LOT OF THESE ITEMS ON THE MARKET SO IT'S ALWAYS DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE ONE. PHILIPS IS GOOD BRAND (TO ME AT LEAST) & IT WAS THE VACUUM FEATURE THAT MADE ME GO FOR IT. ADMITTEDLY, IT IS SLIGHTLY LARGER THATN OTHER TRIMMERS (DUE TO THE VACUUM) BUT IT IS POWERFUL (SLIGHTLY NOISY) LASTS LONG ON A CHARGE & THE COMB HAS MANY ZOOM SETTINGS.

I PERSONALLY FELT 1 COMB WAS ADEQUATE (IT SAVES CLUTTERING UP THE PLACE) & IT DOES A GOOD JOB GLIDING ON YOUR FACE. IF YOU TRIM WITHOUT THE COMB, TAKE YOUR TIME THE 1ST & 2ND TIME AS YOU MAY "SCRATCH" YOURSELF WITH THE BLADES.

A GOOD POINT IS THAT THE BLADES DON'T NEED OILING & YOU CAN USE IT FOR BASIC HAIR TRIMMING, ESPECIALLY YOUR SIDES, BUT OFCOURSE START ON A HIGH LENGTH SETTING & WORK YOUR WAY DOWN.
A BAD POINT IS THAT ON A THICK STUBBLE, WITH THE COMB REMOVED, THE BLADES AREN'T AS PRECISION AS I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO STYLE SIDEBURNS.

YOU CAN ALSO USE IT TO TRIM YOUR MOUSTACHE.

1 THING TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT, ALTOUGH IT SAYS YOU CAN "LOCK-IN" YOUR LENGTH SETTINGS, DON'T OVER PRESS WHEN TRIMMING, ESPECIALLY ON YOUR MOUSTACHE AS THE COMB CAN SLIP 1 OR 2 SETTINGS CLOSER TO THE SKIN, AS HAPPENNED ONCE WITH ME WHEN TRIMMING MY MOUSTACHE BUT LUCKILY IT WASN'T A GREAT DISASTER.
OVERALL, A QUALITY PRODUCT & IT BEING SLIGHTLY LARGER & THE NOISE QUITE LOUD, WERE NOT MUCH OF AN ISSUE.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not brilliant   March 13, 2008

I've had two beard trimmers prior to this one. Both were Babyliss models and both lasted exactly three years (give or take a couple of weeks) - the exact length of warranty!

Disappointed by this plus attracted to the vacuum in this philips model, I decided to purchase it and have been using it for over six months.

I find the turbovac works extremely well - to the point where I can sit at my desk at home, type this review and trim at the same time without any noticeable hair spillage onto the desk! I do however, empty the container more than once (typically 2-3 times, more if I haven't trimmed for a while) and this maintains the vacuum.

When using this trimmer, I found it tells you to trim upwards - ie take the trimmer up your face, not down it, which is what I found the other trimmers tell you to do. It doesn't take long to get used to this and I have quickly adapted to the trimmer.

Holding it was a little awkward at first, given that when you hold it in the natural position, you end up covering the air vents and risk adjusting the comb length. Again, I adjusted rapidly and now hold the trimmer such that my grip is below the air vents.

Because of the upward strokes you make, I have found it a little difficult to trim the moustache, mainly the region under your nose. This is down to design, since with my previous trimmers, I never had this problem. Otherwise, it works nicely.

In fact, it's easy to adjust to using this trimmer and getting decent results. I'm not even put off by the battery and the inability to use from the mains (which the two Babyliss models were able to do).

The one and only thing that does bug me it build quality. I accidentally dropped it onto the floor, fairly near the beginning, when I bought it. I was worried I had broken it but it does fit back together. However, the design means that it is prone to falling, since there's no upright stand and I have dropped it at least four times since. I've managed to put it back together again but please, do be careful with it.

I now regularly take it apart, not because it's broken but because I want to clean it out since hairs do get trapped in and around the system. I find that a can of compressed air (with a straw nozzle) works wonders!

3 out of 5 stars Not tested. Beware.   March 10, 2008

This could have easily been a 5 star product if Philips had taken the time out to make a prototype first. As has been pointed out before, the design flaw that allows the depth setting to be moved during shaving is nothing short of a disgrace, given that the product is fine in every other respect. Philips have made a similar mistake with their Prestigo SRU8015 Universal Remote.

They need a R&D Dept. and fast.

2 out of 5 stars Changes length setting by itself   February 28, 2008

Before ordering this trimmer I read through the reviews and they made me worry that the vacuum wasn't powerful enough. But, some is better than nothing, and at least if it catches some hair it leaves less for me to clean up. The good news about the trimmer is that it catches a lot more hair than I expected! Almost all of it, to be honest. Very good!

However, I also read in the reviews that you could easily change the lenght setting by accident. Not something you want to risk if you want to keep your beard! But the problem should be solved by keeping my fingers away from the dial while trimming. But no... This trimmer - at least my unit - changes the length by itself simply from the force of pressing it to my face. And no, I don't press it extremely hard to my face.

Also, even if it stays on the set lenght the individual steps have so much flexibility that setting it to "3" can be just below "4" or just above "2" - and it will autonomously use this flexibility to change the length while you are trimming.

I can't possibly use this. First time I used it, it changed from 4 to 3 within the first 30 seconds of the trim. I then tested it on my hand and neck and it will easily go from 4 to 1 in a couple of minutes of trimming. With no excess force applied.

I had really hoped this one would be great. I have used Philishave since I can remember, and this won't make me stop. But the QT4045 goes in the garbage!! Two stars, though, for the better-than-exected vacuum.

5 out of 5 stars A great beard trimmer   January 17, 2008

A great trimmer from Philips - the charge lasts forever, it looks fab, the motor is strong.

I use it without the attachment to get that "designer stubble". Works great!

And the vac bit kind of works - you do need to empty it though, and where else would you do it, than in a sink - so you do get some mess. Nevertheless, very happy with the purchase and recommended!
