4 out of 5 stars The transition from Oral-B to Sonicare   April 16, 2008
1 out of 3 found this review helpful

I will keep this brief, since it is for people who are using a (non-sonic) Braun Oral-B and are thinking of moving to Philips Sonicare.

I use the Oral-B Triumph and have done so for around a year. Before that an earlier Oral-B model and before that another one. So I guess I am an Oral-B kinda person - they work, they work well.

Now I have a Philips Sonicare to test drive and it's... interesting.

It is a little slimmer, but broadly the same - how much different could it have been? - and has everything you would expect to a top of the line electric toothbrush, such as LCD displays, long battery life, travel case and a robust charger.

What is different about it is the brush head. Mine came with two different sizes and they are, well, normal. Normal like an old fashioned toothbrush, not normal like the rotary Oral-B brush head. If the battery was flat, you could use a Sonicare as a manual brush.

In motion the Sonicare brush has a high pitched buzz. It sounds like a mosquito going past your ear as you try to fall asleep. The Triumph sounds like a pneumatic drill in comparison. I never thought my trusty brush was that noisy but it makes a racket compared to the Sonicare.

The other difference, the main difference, is in the brushing. My Oral-B spins like a little Catherine wheel, and is therefore nothing like a normal toothbrush. The Sonicare is just like a normal brush in shape and vibrates with such a small range of movement that it is barely visible. Which is fine, but it tickles.

I never knew that teeth could be tickled, but there you go - they can be. The Sonicare tickles them into submission. I have tried and tried to get used to it but to no avail. The Sonicare drives me nuts, while my noisy spinning Oral-B churns and scrubs its way to clean choppers.

I might be an exception, I might be the only person to have ticklish teeth, but forewarned is forearmed. Be careful out there.

As for a rating, hmmm. It is clearly a good piece of kit and my partner has no trouble at all, after switching to Sonicare from a regular brush, so I reckon 4 stars is fair.

5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Experience   March 29, 2008

Philips has a good reputation or quality products. This toothbrush system incorporates some unique devices. The brushing routines are broken down into three modes; Clean, Sensitive and Massage. The latter will induce a tickling feeling. This device has a "quadpacer" which times the cleaning of your mouth into four quadrants, which is a nifty feature to make sure you brush long enough. This can also be deactivated.

The charging stand is a little less sturdy than most but has two other places for brushed. Each brush can also be color coded for family use. Unlike a similar model by Ultreo, the brush heads are smaller. They are also much cheaper, coming in sets of three. The entire unit is approximately $30 less expensive than Ultreo. The overall look is slimmer. The carrying case is flimsy, unlike the hard plastic Ultreo case, but for the value, Philips Sonicare comes out ahead.

5 out of 5 stars YOUR TEETH WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER   January 30, 2008

I had been a user of the Oral-b toothbrushes for the last 7 years until I changed to this Phillips Sonicare brush in October 2007. Even with the oral-b I still had to visit my dentist every three months for a clean and polish, who typically graded the tartar build-up as a '3'. I've used this for 3 months, had my check up and my dentist said there was no need to have my teeth cleaned GRADED '1'. The only difference in the way I clean my teeth has been the brush. Every time I use it it feels like I have just had my teeth cleaned.

4 out of 5 stars expensive, but worth it   January 17, 2008

I was a little intrigued to see what all the fuss was about - after all, it's not everyone who can spend this sort of money on a toothbrush. Was it really worth the cost?

Oh yes. Once you've got used to the noise and sensation of the sonic cleaning, it's really quite refreshing. Even after the first brushing my teeth felt noticeably cleaner, almost 'fresh from the dentist' clean. I love the little beep which tells you when to move on to the next quadrant of your mouth too. The massage setting takes a bit of getting used to, and I'm not sure I'd ever use the short 1 minute clean.

The base unit is neat too - pop the heads into the UV sanitising bit, press a button and a funky blue glow comes out of a tiny window in the door.

The only downside then is the price (plus the price of new heads). Look at it this way. Some people drive cheap cars, some drive Jaguars or Aston Martins. This is the Aston of the toothbrush world. If you can afford one, I'd highly recommend picking on up. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Good but expensive   January 16, 2008

I didn't expect this to actually do much, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well my teeth were cleaned.

The kit comes with two different sized brush heads which for around 100 I think is a mistake on behalf of the manufacturer. They should include at least enough brushes for a couple to use (two sets of two), but I would think at least four sets would be a good idea.

I tried using the brush for a week on the standard clean mode, there are other modes like "Sensitive" & "Massage" together with a mode which beeps to tell you when to move the brush to another part of your mouth. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that in only a week my teeth were noticeably cleaner to look at, I didn't use any special tooth paste just a basic budget paste that I always use.

My teeth felt like they had been cleaned by the dentist. I does however take a bit of getting used to, and you will end up having a few nasty vibrations where the stem of the brush head rattles against the teeth, it doesn't hurt, just wakes you up a bit. But the results are definitely worth the effort of learning to use it.

Overall I think this is a very good product, let down by it's price, hence one star missing, I think the price makes this a luxury product, whereas if it was just 25 cheaper it would be very competitive and very hard to resist.

It certainly beats my old manual brush, which now sits sadly unused.
