Problems with finding Satellites. May 11, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Been having trouble with this... it takes between half an hour to one hour to find satellites, and I live in Central London... sometimes I arrive at my destination before the thing kicks in. I have reported my problem with the Garmin help desk online, but they seem to be stalling and taking along time to answer my emails with still no resolution, I have been having trouble since March, it is now May.
I have reinstalled the software and reset the system several times as instructed... still nothing!
Perhaps you should wait before buying a more advanced model with a better method of finding satellites.
Brilliant May 3, 2008 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I purchased a Sony sat nav a few months back and hated it - touch screen not responsive even after several presses, poor suction cup etc..
I then searched on here for an different make and read all the reviews and purchased a nuvi 250w last week. Amazon stated estimated delivery of 7th May, but arrived yesterday (2 May) so that was only 4 days with the free postage option. Brilliant service.
The unit is fantastic. The Sony cost me over double the price of this one but did not do anything extra or better. This unit beats it hands down. I got it out of the box, switched it on and it found a signal within 2 minutes ( I live in a rural area where mobile phone signal is patchy ) which was better than I hoped.
I went through the easy to use menus and had set the unit up, programmed my home destination and my favourite addresses in about 10 minutes. The display is great, the cradle and suction cup seem robust and it has found the most far flung and remote destinations (some not even on A-Z's) that I can think of.
This unit has far outweighed my expectations, the touchscreen is great to use, the unit looks nice and the voice is ok to listen to. I can not believe how good this unit is for the price. It does what it's supposed to do, the cradle is cheap if ever needed replacing (not like 129 pounds for the sony cradle!!!!) After making a big mistake buying the sony I spent days looking at every sat nav model and review that I could find and I am so glad that I purchased this model. I still can't believe the price and would have happily paid far more for this excellent unit.
surprise! disappointing for use on vacation May 1, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
It was my first purchase of a SatNav, though I had been using them for years while renting cars. I bought this Garmin for my holiday to Andalusia in Spain. I will list my disappointments below, but let me start with the biggest plus of using the SatNav: it saved me a big speeding fine, as it was correct in warning me about a mobile speed camera zone! The disappointments then: 1. on my way from Malaga to Seville, it appeared the device was completely unaware of a new highway (but hey, my Garmin was 3 days out of the box, so guess which one was newer). The Garmin 'forgot' to mention I had to take an exit and was completely confused, unable to even recalculate a route, as it believed I was driving off road! I had to take charge and turn around going back to the point at which the Garmin got confused. 2. Despite havig the setting at Fastest Travel Time, I had to override route directions for a while (suggesting me to take local roads for about 150 miles) to drive to a highway only 25 miles away from the starting point. Once the SatNav got my idea, it recalculated and came up with a shorter driving time than its original calculated fastest route...not to mention that using local routes would have included driving behind big lorries that are difficult to overtake and add to the Garmin estimated driving time. 3. the SatNav was exceedingly slow in picking up the satellite signal, sometimes taking several minutes, despite being in wide open spaces 4. it was incorrect in several instances guiding me through the narow streets of Seville and Cadiz. not exactly ideal.
So all in all, if you need a SatNav for holidays, rather than for big city travel (i.e. London), this Garmin is not the right one. I will be returning mine (not knowing a good alternative). TomTom maybe?
