5 out of 5 stars Nice addition to Archos range   January 14, 2008

The Archos TV+ is about the size and weight of a hardback book, dressed in a nice aluminium shell. It connects inline between your tuning device (Sky+ in my case) and the TV. It has countless connectors on the back - composite, S-Video, component and RGB, all on input and output. It can also output via HDMI, although I don't have a hidef TV so I haven't tried this. You get 2 scart leads in the box which actually connect to ALL these connections!

The remote control is square, and has a mouse pointer, a more traditional DVD-player-style direction arrows and OK button, and a full (but small) QWERTY keyboard. It's amazing how quickly you find your way around - you will find yourself only using the controls on the right hand side of the remote to watch movies, you only need he other controls if you are browsing the web.

The interface will be familiar to those people who have used the Archos players before. It's a doddle to get it set up on your network (wireless or ethernet) and it detected my media server without a problem (I use Twonky). I bought the plugins from the Archos ste that would allow me to play more formats, as well as surfing the web. Don't expect to be able to read much on a standard TV - the text on most websites is just too small for the resolution of the screen, but it would work well on a hidef TV.

Once you've registered the product on the Archos website, the electronic program guide will download the guide and you can select programs by selecting them in the graphical interface. It certainly has all the Sky channels. If you point the device at the Sky box, it also changes channel for you at the set time. The quality of the recordings is fine on my traditional TV. To be honest, with Sky+, I'm unlikely to use the recording functionality of the Archos, but it's nice to know it's there!

I have an Archos 504 and the functionality offered by the TV+ is a great addition. If you have a 6-series Archos then you all ready have the streaming capabilities, and this would be rather like having your player permanently connected to the TV via the DVR dock, so the price tag may not warrant the extra expenditure.

Overall, it looks and feels rock solid, and the interface just works - none of the constant fiddling and drop-outs that I've experienced with a couple of other streaming media players (Netgear EVA700, I'm looking at you). The interface is easy to find your way round. All in all, everything just works with typical Archos quality.
