Amazon.co.uk Review
The revival of Battlestar Galactica has proven not just to be a roaring success with viewers, but one of the most critically-acclaimed science-fiction series too. Battlestar Galactica: Razor's place is as an introduction to the events that take place in the fourth season of the show. Yet it's also a terrific feature-length TV movie in its own right.

The story of Battlestar Galactica: Razor actually focuses quite a lot on a different Battlestar, the Pegasus. Throughout the movie, we see it under the command of the love-to-hate Admiral Helena Cain, while we also follow Lieutenant Kendra Shaw under her tutelage, and Lee Adama's first mission in charge of the Pegasus.

Naturally too, Battlestar Galactica: Razor isn't shy of Cylons, as we see them in the infancy of their attack on humankind. And all of these ingredients make for some interesting back story to the main show, and a great one-off piece of entertainment too. It doesn't pull its punches when it comes to the action sequences, and there's some worthwhile character work in there too.

While clearly intended as an appetite-whetter for the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica, Razor nonetheless has enough in the tank to more than hold its own. It proves to be yet another example as to why Battlestar is the show that's been topping science fiction fans' favourites lists for some time. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Superb   May 2, 2008
A must see for fans and an exciting flick for others - however I would recommend that you watch sequentially. Great piece of TV with cinema standard production values.

4 out of 5 stars For BSG fans (not for others)   May 1, 2008

The current re-imagined and updated "Battlestar Galactica" is, in my opinion, the best sci-fi series currently on air. Its sweep, the depth of its storylines, the characterisation and acting, the ability to create societies that are both alien and familiar at the same time, above all its ability to hold interest and provoke thought - there is nothing to match it, and there hasn't been for a few years. (I was a great fan of "Firefly" but wouldn't see these two series as going head-to-head, "Firefly" had its own universe and its own, very different, strengths.)
For fans of BSG "Razor" is a welcome addition to the DVD collection. It fills out the "side story" of Admiral Cain and the Battlestar Pegasus, and goes some way (not all the way) to explaining why she acted the way she did. The production style and dark gritty atmosphere were typical "BSG" and it was interesting to see the "old style" Cylons and ships, familiar to viewers of the original series, popping up in the obsolete and ostensibly abandoned Cylon base. It ended on a teasing note that will certainly whet the appetite of those who have just watched season 3 for the developments of season 4.
My only complaint: even for a fan it's a bit pricey for what you get.
Those who have not been following "BSG" are likely to be totally lost; certainly they will miss most of the nuances and the plot aspects relevant to the story arcs of the main series. They should avoid "Razor" and instead go and buy the mini-series so they can get orientated and hooked.

3 out of 5 stars And the point is?   April 7, 2008

I had no idea that this film was being made until i suddenly saw adverts appear on Sky shortly before it was premiered. I have been a long standing fan of the series so i watched it without hesitation.

It was a reasonably entertaining ride, filled in a few small holes in the back story, but nothing that really needed filling in or infact had even appeared to be noticible holes before the film is watched.

The whole point of the film(aside from a money making scheme) appears to have been to deliver to the viewer(the characters remained blissfully ignorant). Something which was completely and utterly pointless, speaking personally it was something i already suspected. I won't divuldge the details of what was revealed as imo it would ruin it for those that aren't already suspecting it.

So to summerise, it's an okay film, but is not worth watching and i would infact recommend that you don't watch. If i had not already suspected what they revealed then i would have much rather waited and been suprised by it in the upcoming series. The only people i would recommend to watch it are those who are purist fans and feel the need to see and know everything about it.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed creation of a masterful series   March 28, 2008

While Razor is perfectly watchable, it isn't nearly up to the high standards of the regular series. Introducing a new character for just one feature length episode in my view was a mistake, it's hard to forge any sort of connection with Kendra Shaw unlike the regular BSG characters whose lives are studied in much greater detail over the course of three seasons. It doesnt help that the part of Kendra Shaw isn't played particularly well unlike Starbuck and Baltar who could have ended up as boring characters but have had life injected into them by Katee Sackof and James Callis. Although Michelle Forbes gives another excellent performance as Admiral Cain.

I also don't think that the background story of Pegasus was really nessesary, seeing the events unfold that had only been talked about in the series didnt really work, and I found it far better imagining what had gone on when I learned about them mid way through season two than to have them laid ou in front of me.

The visual effects in this feature are also very hit and miss. There are some amazing scenes of the battlestar shipyard under attack and some awful ones like the cast standing in front of the crashed old style raider (they may as well have used crayons and a canvas to put it in behind them). The old style Cylons were also poorly executed in terms of CGI. As someone that works in the computer effects industry I had been particularly impressed with BSG's sequences, but I'm hoping this isn't going to be a prelude to the sort of effects used in the forth season and BSG retuns to it's overall exceptionally high standards.

4 out of 5 stars A good story, but not essential   March 11, 2008

The Pegasus story arc from season 2 of BSG was one of the best of the entire series, so when fans heard that Razor, a double-episode/film filling in the back-story to the ship, was on the way they were understandably excited. On the whole Razor delivers on it's promises of more action and an insight into some of the Pegasus characters, but some minor flaws do enough damage to the experience that though it's entertaining this isn't really unmissable.
The story of Pegasus is told from the perspective of Kendra Shaw, a new character who we follow in multiple time-lines (this thing leaps back and forth in time a lot) as the cylons initial attack and aftermath are played against events taking place sometime around the end of season 2. The story is actually very good, with a nice series of character revelations (particularly with regards to Admiral Cain) about the Pegasus crew members and a pleasantly ominous ending which definitely changes the way you look at the ending of season 3. The story also features various scenes from the first cylon war, which have a nice little cameo from the cylons from the original BSG series.
Sadly it's these segments set in the first cylon war which let Razor down, the effects (normally so incredible) are very below par and Adama's dialog was deeply cliched. They set the scene for the main story nicely but frankly were a serious low point in the experience. Having said that the brief Cain segment in that timeline was very good and provided some interesting back-story for her character.
The DVD box promises us 'unseen footage and more action'. I missed this when it was first aired and as such cannot comment on that particular aspect, but Razor has a lot more action sequences in it then a standard BSG story. These action sequences certainly fit with the more militaristic aspects of the plot and also with Cain's more aggressive attitude to events. None of the action looks out of place (except with the bad effects sequences previously mentioned) and it's all done with that standard BSG gritty attitude that makes everything far more gripping.
This double-episode/film holds up nicely; it continues BSG's dark and philosophical style, delivers some exciting action sequences, provides us with interesting insights into some previously underdeveloped characters, and has a great twist at the end that will leave you very excited to see the fourth season of the main show. Having said that there are enough problems with this thing to keep it from a five star rating. If you're a fan of BSG and you're looking for something to tide you over until the fourth season then Razor should do that just fine.
