Won't install - look elsewhere May 9, 2008 Looking for a RAID 0 backup solution (Vista backup failed me recently) and this seemed to tick all the boxes.
After reading the reviews decided on a 'try before buy' policy and downloaded the trial. Tried the install twice under 32 bit Vista Home Ultimate and it dumped out of the install process both times. Tells me all I need to know - caveat emptor.
Oh well - plan B I guess. This doesn't get off first base.
Amazed May 4, 2008 I used Acronie True Image 10 for almost a year (my husband is using it now on a geriatric PC running Windows XP Pro) before I upgraded to Acronis 11 with XP Pro & Office Pro on my newish desk top. No, not Vista yet! Everthing runs smoothly to our chosen schedules and is backed up to an external hard drive. I had early issues with running out of space despite setting the required allocation for one Full back up followed by 6 Differentials, according to the manual which I downloaded in full. Why not give their Tech Help a phone call as I did, to get the space allocation sorted. At 1p. a minute to the USA its hardly a big deal! Both work flawlessly for both of us, and sends emails to confirm the backups have been successful or not, whichever is the case. But for that, I would give it the full 5 stars. The message is RTFM!! You can even do a try out with v.11, so what is the fuss!
Unreliable April 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this product a few weeks ago and although installation was OK I wish I had never bothered. I'm using it with Vista and backing up to a NAS drive. Most files backup without problems but it fails with Outlook data files. I bought backup software for piece of mind. Reliability is paramount. My Outlook data files are in the order of 100Mb, the backup file is 50Kb and is missing all info apart from the file structure. I have tried re-installation. I have tried full and incremental backups. I have contacted Acronis 3 times and have not had a reply to any of my messages. I'm now using a 60-day free trial of Norton Ghost (available from Symantec US not UK) which seems to be working reliably. Acronis is also available as a free trial download. I would suggest you try that first before spending money. I would accept the bug if Acronis appeared to care but given their lack of reply I'm loosing patience.
Do Not Buy April 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I wish I had never heard the name Acronis, in numerous magazines and customer reviews it is reported as an excellent piece of software. In theory it looks to be so it backs up according to a schedule, controls the number of backups you want to keep, etc. I am running it under Windows Vista Ultimate and the problem is the software is completely unreliable. I have found that the scheduled tasks do not run to completion they hang, it does not delete old no longer required backups, and it doesn't report problems unless you investigate it yourself. My impression is that this software has been designed for professional use and without any thought put on to the home market. As an example Acronis support keeps telling me to uninstall and reinstall, a job that takes a long time as it means you have to go in and delete register entries. Not something I would recommend for ordinary home users. How it gets its reputation I do not know, but I am going to consign my copy to the place it belongs, the dustbin
My Safety Net! February 13, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I'm truly amazed at all the poor reviews and problems! I've used several versions of True Image over the years, though admittedly only on XP, after migrating from a problem-ridden Norton Ghost setup.
I currently run True Image Workstation, performing monthly backup images onto a spare hard-drive (rather pointless putting it on the main drive and there's added safety in case of total drive failures). Reckless and daring behaviour has necessitated recovering my active partion on several occassions.
I've never had the slightest glitch with any of the versions I've used so maybe this is a current problem related to adapting it to run on Vista. A problem there certainly appears to be - I can't believe this number of people are all 'mis-understanding' it in some way (it's always been fairly intuitive). I sincerely hope Acronis sort it out because I regularly recommend it and continue to rate it as a first-class product.
