4 out of 5 stars WARNING   March 29, 2008

Why has this amazing software package increased by 15.00 on amazon? It was listed for 99.99 yesterday. Without it being on sale before it seems unreasonable for AMAZON to simply up the prices like this...

5 out of 5 stars Good choice for advanced home user   February 21, 2008

While good to get you going, the photo and video packages often bundled with PCs etc really don't give you anything advanced and easy to use (I mean the budget editions that usually cost about 25 to buy separately).

So after deciding that I no way need the mega-functionality of professional packages (even if I could afford splashing out several hundred pounds on one!) I looked into reviews from a number of different sources on a couple of mid-range packages but the only way to really know is to try one out first before buying.

Adobe have a try-before-buy scheme for stuff like this on their website (the Pro versions and the Elements versions of PhotoShop and Premier are available) although the file downloads are naturally very big. It was after trying these that made me buy the Elements bundle.

I spent pretty much a whole weekend with the trial version (which is fully featured with a 30day timeout) editing holiday photos and video clips trying out various features - it's really quite intuitive to use and (so far) I haven't had any of the crashes that others have experienced so for me it gets a thumbs up.

Surprisingly, ordering from Amazon was a couple of pounds cheaper than buying the unlock codes direct from Adobe and also gets you the installation DVD and manuals. Note though that you have to uninstall the downloaded time-limited version and then reinstall from the disk as the licence codes with the disk won't unlock the downloaded time-limited version.

4 out of 5 stars Superb product apart from the lack of AVCHD support   November 28, 2007

This product trumps the competitors in my view, in having the ability not only to organise both still pictures and video footage in one system, but also to use either type of media easily in whatever you are making. It is easy to make anything from a DVD to a website, or output to numerous devices such as mobile phones or PDAs.

Most importantly for irreplaceable stills and clips it has excellent backup (with verification) facilities, including backing up to anything from a hard drive to a blue ray disc and everything in between.

The photo editing tools and video editing tools are for the most part the same as the top of the range professional versions from Adobe, however much more simple to use. The Premiere Elements part (video editing) has a particularly simple interface compared with most products, despite having very wide-ranging capabilities. I would have given 5 stars except..

The one big howler is the inability to edit video from the latest Sony and Panasonic high definition camcorders which record to memory chips (AVCHD format) and which I believe will ultimately dominate the upper end of the "prosumer" market because of their wonderful picture quality, portability and lack of moving parts (lens excluded).

Therefore if Adobe introduce this capability, or if you are confident you'll never use the AVCHD format then this is, I believe, the best product for enthusiastic amateurs.

1 out of 5 stars Caution: this software does not support AVCHD   October 25, 2007

I bought Premiere Elements 4 specifically to edit my HD footage created with a Sony HD camcorder on MemoryStick in the AVCHD format. Being suspicious that the product details claim HD editing but not specifically the popular AVCHD format, I contacted Adobe Customer service and Technical Support to get re-assurance that it would work - which they did, Regrettably having made the purchase and actually tried it, I found that it would not import any AVCHD files that would play correctly. I could hear sound but no video, so I contacted Technical Support again and this time received quite different advise. They now say PE4 does NOT support AVCHD and if I had bought the software for this purpose I should contact Customer Service for a refund. Very dissappointing and no indication if this version will EVER get AVCHD capability through updates. Shame on Adobe, so if you are looking to do AVCHD editing you should probably look elsewhere.
