4 out of 5 stars Sparkles like the stars   April 30, 2008

What a lovely film. Was very impressed with Claire Dane's English accent and Charlie Cox seemed to turn from a gawky awkward teenager to a handsome young man - this lad has bucket loads of charisma, he will go far!

My only gripe about this film and it is only a small criticism is Ricky Gervais who just seemed like he was playing another version of David Brent.

Although I loved this film, I am knocking a star off for the disappointing extras. Why, when this film was so popular at the UK box office, do we only get commentary and the rest of the world gets bloopers, making of and deleted scenes?!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful fairytale   April 30, 2008

I was dragged along to the cinema to see this, but when told it was a fairytale, did not want to see it. Well I was riveted from start to finish. Have since watched it several times on DVD.
It's basically a story about a magical land called Stormhold that is over the wall, that no-one is allowed to enter. Teenager Tristan enters that world and the rest..... well you'll have to watch it for yourself.
The story is totally far fetched but fantastically written. It's been a long time since there's been a family film as good as this, with innuendo's only the grown ups would understand. I felt the acting was superb and I haven't laughed so much in ages. Robert De Niro was just fantastic. It's an image of him I can't get out of my head, but wont spoil it by mentioning it, in case any readers haven't seen the film. Michelle Pfeiffer was wonderful as a witch. In fact I thought all the acting was good, even the brief appearance of Ricky Gervais.
If you haven't seen it get it!!! If you have seen it and didn't persevere until the end, watch it again!! Can't recommend it highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars Star Dusted   April 21, 2008

Ok first up. Did you like The Princess Bride? Yes? Good, then you will love this. Not sure what I'm talking about? Rent it out!
This is a movie which just is not made anymore. Its a kids story, allegedly, with some very adult asides. Think Big. Its a movie which appeals to the child in you. The story revolves around the search for true love. And how to find it where you least expect it. Thrown in for good measure is the story of a blood thirsty accession to the throne of a kingdom, lightning pirates, witches, magic and astronomy. Need more?
How about, Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfieffer, Clare Danes, Ricky Gervais, Peter O'Toole, Rupert Everett, Sienna Miller and Charlie Cox? Satisfied now?
Its not a story that can be easily told, just get it out and run with it. The star names mostly make cameo appearances, even Sir Ian McKellen turns up as the narrator. The best parts are taken by the biggest show offs, and I do not mean that as an insult. DeNiro and Pfeiffer are hilariously good. Both playing very much against type. DeNiro proves he can do light comedy, not the meet the parents stereotype, and Pfeffer's backfiring use of magic as cosmetic surgery is extremely funny.
Matthew Vaughan directs from his own co-written screenplay. And it was obviously a hoot to make, which comes across on the screen. Even the CGI works. My one disappointment is that te leads are slightly overshadowed by the star cameos, they never really compete, or ironoically out twinkle the bigger names.
If you need cheering up, or even if you just want to rediscover your inner child, this is the perfect movie. Or else get it for your kids, and watch it with them. You'll all have a great time.

2 out of 5 stars started well...   April 20, 2008

I was really looking forward to this film - but about 1/2 way through it just fizzled out - you could guess exactly what was going to happen and the acting and special effects just were not good enough to over come this

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Entertainment   April 19, 2008

I absolutely love this film!
The characters are rounded, the adventure exciting and the ending lovely!!
From the scenery to the costumes to the make up, the production is flawless. The actors must have had a blast making this movie and I think it shows on screen.
My only slight disappointment was Ricky Gervais - it's a shame his voice is so distinctive as I couldn't shake the vision of David Brent every time he spoke!
