5 out of 5 stars Outstanding series it's got to win a BAFTA!   April 8, 2008
Ross Kemp and the team behind the series should win a journalist award however since he is not actually a qualified journalist (from what I understand) I suspect "real" journalists will be a bit put out at what a great job they done. I don't agree with the current wars but I fully 100% back our troops, they are after all only following the orders of the politicians we put in charge, so total respect for these guys and it went up even more once I got to see what it's really like thanks to what can only be described as an outstanding piece of REAL journalism, this is not some Hollywood film, this is as real as it gets for viewers safe in our seats sitting at home.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!   April 4, 2008

Having watched the whole series from start to finish this is a true reliable source on what is happening in Iraq. Ross Kemp really does deserve a journalist award for this. Back to the series, Kemp joins the Royal Anglian Platoon encountering everything that happens to them. It is truly fascinating watching what actually happens, sure the newspapers say one thing but this does show how wrong they can be. I don't want to spoil the adventure because as you watch this you are gripped, it almost feels like an action-packed film. I believe this to be one one of the best documentaries on T.V. not sure whether you would want this on DVD but this is definatly worth a look!

5 out of 5 stars Not what I expected   April 3, 2008

Having watched the trailers for this programme and listening to Ross Kemp narrate that 'he has fought as a soldier, he has mourned as a soldier.........' was, to be honest, getting on my nerves. How can he mourn as a soldier? You have to be one, be married to one, have sons, daughters, friends as one to really understand what it's like to mourn as a soldier.
I didn't want to watch any of the programme as I thought it would be all about Ross and his ego. Fortunately for me my husband was watching it one night and I sat down in the middle of it. I watched it every week after that. Honest. Moving. Emotional. Unforgettable.
At times both my husband and myself were brought to tears.
The public eye see our soldiers past and present as photo's, numbers, statistics. Hopefully this programme will show them what it really is to be a soldier.

5 out of 5 stars Eye opening stuff   March 18, 2008

This was truly awakening, eye-opening, matter of fact television. For those of you (like Kemp, the soldiers he served with, and myself) who thought modern warfare was no longer about the fighting infantry man foot soldier and all about fly-by-wire electronic kit, think again. Watch this, learn, and gain a massive amount of respect for Kemp for putting himself in so many trouser soiling situations to tell their story, but more so for the troops who are doing the job. A gripping watch, sure to touch you in some way. Even if for the very sad realities of war. A must watch - incredibly humbling.

5 out of 5 stars Essential viewing for our apathetic population!   March 16, 2008

I do not usually watch programmes like this. I am against our recent involvement in war and am genuinely horrified by the gung ho nature of the US and UK politicians BUT.... this is a huge wake up call! I learned so much about what conditions are like and was able to view our troops as the human beings they are - their joy at getting contact from home, their appreciation of basic things like a shower and a good meal and their spirit and cameraderie. I had lost sight of all this!
Ross Kemp and his team do an excellent job of showing what happens without glorifying war or preaching, any real message he sends is about the need for them to equipped properly, which is common sense to all but those who run the country.
The crew are brave to actually join the front line and the programme is totally absorbing. Ross Kemp is engaging and reassuringly natural, there is no playing to the camera, no drama for the sake of it and sometimes the images are left to speak for themselves.
It is especially moving when he reports on casualties and interviews loved ones of those who died.
This is a landmark show and needs to be viewed especailly by those who seem apathetic to the armed forces. It does not make me believe war is right but it does remind me that our soldiers are in real danger in a way I could never imagine.
Watch it - then recommend it to someone who needs to develop empathy!
