The Real Deal March 24, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
With 136 reviews already in the Amazon can The Wolf humbly recognises that he will be unable to contribute a great deal more than his animated predecessors have already achieved in describing this extraordinary album.
The will to write is born of a desire to add my own small tribute to this troubled young woman's presence in the world - late in the day but well meant.
In other reviews I have already declared my exasperation with a market saturated to bursting with new young female singer/songwriter/performers. In some ways perhaps it's not been too bad a thing. After all, the boyband phenomenon might have endured !
The facebook/youtube generation are looking for saviours; for voices who will speak to them and for them of their lives and loves, highs and lows, gains and losses at a time in our history when a little warmth, a little meaning would not go amiss.
In 'Back to Black' Miss Winehouse gives us something quite precious. Songs and performances of such enduring quality that our breath is quite taken away. With a voice poised somewhere between a fine aged bourbon and a cat about to pounce on it's unassuming prey she produces magical interpretations of all eleven of these superlative songs.
Her delivery, vocal flexibility, tone and phrasing are all quite extraordinary. The dark, sometimes wryly amusing, lyrical content transforms the personal into near-universal territory in one easy sweep. In 'Love is a Losing Game' she pins down one of the most affecting love songs ever written !
This album is destined for classic status. Top notch production and musicianship is deftly maintained throughout. A triumph of quality and content over mere style.
Miss Winehouse you are indeed the real deal !
Deliberate Vandalism? March 20, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Just played this CD for the first time today and after hearing a nasty distorted noise I assumed one of the wires had worked loose from my speakers. A quick check revealed everything was ok. I then realized the noise was a deliberate production attempt to replicate the sound of worn vinyl. Although I appreciate this can create pleasant atmospherics, doing this on a digital format and playing it back on a decent hifi produces very harsh, unpleasant digital distortion. It occurred to me that the problem might be caused by the digital upsampling on my CD player, but turning this off only helped a little. I guess the only use for this CD is the cheap and cheerful player in my car.
Amusing to think the only way to hear this without the artificial vinyl style distortion is to listen to the vinyl. Even stranger to think that this might be one CD that actually sounds better on MP3.
A Classic. March 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Writing as a 45 year old who just hates modern stuff, be it TV, Cinema or Music, I have to say I love this album. This young lady has got such a powerful voice. I love every track on this CD. Unusual because I often think that you get a lot of duff music on CD's. I've bought LP's and CD's in the past and been hugely disappointed, even with The Who, and Rolling Stones. I bought this after seeing the video Back to Black on BBC Breakfast one morning. I thought "this is bleeding superb" I sat and watched and listened. Then I downloaded all the tracks from Limewire, then went out and bought the CD. Get the CD and support this girl. She deserves to make it big.
Good voice but... March 12, 2008 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
...that's it. The rest you can forget. There's so much copied it's a wonder she's not been sued for plagiarism - even the hair-do is copied. Simply because many are too young to know or some are old enough to get nostalgic for a bygone era is not a reason to hype her like this. British music must be desperate to need to do this. She should give up the drugs and see whether she's can write something original. This stuff so far was done better in bygone eras. So, listenable but nothing special.
Not living up to the hype March 11, 2008 3 out of 12 found this review helpful
Amy Whinehouse this, Amy whinehouse that. Occasionally terms like "talent," and "brilliance" are dropped beside her name. Oh, she's definitely made it in the music world; one negative from me won't change that.
First off: yes she has quite a good voice. But she doesn't live up to the hype. And if I ever hear people yammering about her 'distinct motown-sound" I'm going to hurt someone. Motown isn't new, people! The music is acceptable, works well in a car during an evening with some friends when you try to be sophisticated. (whethr you succeed or not is another story)
I hope for her own sake she ditches the ugly Beehive, eats some more and gives the drugs and alcohol a rest for once. The way she behaves I makes me almost think she doesn't deserve her success. Ofcourse, her current state of unhealthyness doesn't affect this CD. If you like it, buy it. If you like Amy, don't buy it: you're financing her addiction. That's as black as it gets.
